SERVICES: Affordable legal representation for individuals and families

We know that many individuals face significant life challenges involving legal issues but do not qualify for representation by government supported legal services and cannot afford private legal representation. Greater Good aspires to fill that need, and with our low overhead and predictable fees, we believe we can do that. Further, in our view, a more just society, where all individuals are able to assert their legal rights, will lead to a greater good.

We currently offer individual representation to certain underrepresented individuals in the manner described below. We hope to add more areas of law in the future, as we expand our vision of Greater Good. Please reach out to us if you are in need of representation in any of the areas identified below.

Individual Employment Representation

We provide direct legal services to individuals with employment claims of discrimination (race, sexual orientation, gender, age, disability, etc.), retaliation, sexual harassment, breach of contract, and wrongful termination, and other employment disputes (so long as such representation does not conflict with our representation of any nonprofit or small business). We also represent individuals with respect to contract and severance negotiations, mediation, and provide representation before the Pennsylvania Human Rights Commission, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Initial Employment Document Review and Consultation: $150.

Other costs determined on a case by case basis.

Disability Rights Legal Services

We understand that despite laws and advocacy efforts there are still too many individuals with disabilities who are denied equal rights to education, employment, healthcare, housing, and more. Our mission is to advocate for their right to equitable access and participation in these important aspects of their lives. We work to remove the barriers that stand in the way of their full and meaningful participation in our schools and communities. To accomplish this mission, we provide direct legal services to individuals with disabilities and we educate our communities to break down these barriers.

Fair housing and LGBTQ representation

We represent individuals and families in landlord/tenant and fair housing matters as well as LGBTQ rights and other matters that adversely impact those most vulnerable in our community. We will develop a reasonable fee structure up front that is consistent with your needs or your family’s needs.

Special Education

We know that you, families of children with disabilities, mostly contact special education attorneys “as a last resort.” We know too that you often come reluctantly, with hesitation, uncertainty, and even fear. You have questions, but you may not feel like you know what to ask. Always in the back of your mind are thoughts about, “How much will this cost?,” “Can we afford it?” and “Will the school take this out on my child?” And those sentiments are only a few among many.

Our experience has shown us that the root of many conflicts which brings families to special education attorneys can be avoided and prevented when families and educators develop and maintain collaborative professional relationships from the onset of the child’s educational program. Our goal is to support this for the greater good.

What services do we provide?

We provide consultation and advice, review of educational records/documents; participation in IEP (Individualized Education Program) and other education related meetings; legal representation in due process hearings, all on behalf of children with disabilities.

What are the costs?

Keeping with our goal, we offer various services for you to choose how you can best meet your needs. The listed services and costs are starting points. Our services will vary and our rates adjusted depending on what you want and need.

IEP/UDL Review: $150.00

Think of this as an IEP “Wellness” check! We offer reviews of IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) BEFORE legal issues arise, as a proactive way for maintaining healthy family/school relationships.

We will raise questions for you to consider, offer suggestions for improving the IEP document and process, and provide resource and referral information as appropriate. We use the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to assist in our review to make suggestions for facilitating stronger inclusive environments and student empowerment within the principles of the IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). You can share these with your child’s teachers and as part of the IEP process to positively and constructively support collaborative relationships between you and your child’s school.

Education Records/Document Review: $250.00

Sometimes families recognize that “something is just not working” in their child’s current education program. Maybe their child is struggling academically, emotionally, or socially. You might want a different program for your child. Something needs changed but families are not always sure what changes are needed and the best way to advocate for those changes. Maybe you have been trying to communicate your concerns but for various reasons, the concerns and issues remain. We can complete a comprehensive review of educational records, hear from you about your concerns and what you want changed, and offer our legal opinion for options for you to consider.

IEP Meeting (up to 2 hours): $300.00
($100 for each additional hour)

We can participate in IEP meetings to help you resolve ongoing educational issues. Often, legal representation at this stage can be instrumental in resolving matters so that due process hearings and more formal legal proceedings can be avoided.

Settlement Document Review: $300.00

Has your child’s school district given you a proposed settlement agreement? We can review the document and answer your questions.

Due Process Hearing: Rates determined on case by case basis

We can represent families at due process hearings where a hearing officer will hear testimony from you and your child’s school and make a decision based on an analysis of the facts and the laws that apply to the education of children with disabilities.

Other Disability Related Legal Issues

Do you have a question or an issue that has come about because of your disability? We can talk to you more about this and help you determine your legal rights and the advocacy you need.
